by | Jan 28, 2025 | Business Lessons Learned through Life Experiences, Goal Setting, Motivation

Let’s make 2025 your best year yet! I look forward to helping you reach (and then exceed) your business goals. Let’s get to work with an essential first step: SMART goals.

Welcome to 2025.

As The Business Coach, one of my goals is to support my clients – and you – with coaching and advice to make 2025 your best year yet.

What does “the best year yet” look like? Well, that depends on you!

Each of us have our own definition of what a best year yet will look like:

  • Growing sales numbers
  • More clients
  • Improved profit margin
  • Better work/life balance
  • Fitness and health goals
  • Peace of mind
  • Running your business versus your business running you

Whatever your goals are, they won’t become reality without planning. That’s where SMART Goals come in. You can read about the importance of SMART Goals below.

Some of you know that I have a Master Captains License and I also teach sailing. Expect sailing metaphors from me now and then! Here’s one.

You are the captain of your ship. You know how you got to where you are today. But nobody knows everything – and we don’t know what we don’t know. Throughout the year I will share the knowledge I’ve developed over 27 years of Business / Executive Coaching plus another 20 years of starting, growing, and running businesses.

I will share old school methods, new school ideas and methods which will give you your own unique school.

You’ve no doubt noticed that this newsletter looks different. As a subscriber, you should have received an email recently (check your spam folder if it’s not in your inbox) explaining the move and the new and improved The Business Coach newsletter.

In brief, I’ve moved this newsletter to Substack – a newsletter platform (with a few other bells and whistles) – because it’s simple and allows us to talk with each other.

I look forward to supporting you throughout 2025, whether directly as a coaching client, as a reader of this newsletter, and/or in conversations on my publication in Substack.

It’s going to be your best year yet!

Let’s get going!

SMART Goals: A Foundation for Success in Business and Life

For over 30 years, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of clear, actionable goals. Whether guiding an entrepreneur through a business pivot or helping an individual achieve personal milestones, one tool consistently delivers results: SMART goals.

This framework isn’t just a buzzword. It’s a practical, effective way to turn aspirations into achievements, ensuring every step forward is purposeful and measurable. Here’s how you can harness this system to drive success in both your personal and professional life.

Why SMART Goals Work
SMART goals provide a structured approach to goal setting. They take abstract ideas and give them shape, creating a clear pathway to achievement. The beauty of the SMART system lies in its simplicity and adaptability.

Think of it as a blueprint. Instead of saying, “I want to succeed,” you’re articulating a detailed vision with actionable steps. This clarity not only reduces overwhelm but also enhances motivation because progress is tangible. And when goals feel achievable, they inspire confidence.

Breaking Down SMART Goals
Let’s dive into the components of SMART goals and how you can apply them effectively.

1. Specific
Goals must be clear and focused to eliminate ambiguity. Ask yourself:

  • What exactly am I trying to achieve?
  • Why does this goal matter to me or my organization?
  • Who else is involved, if anyone?

Examples:

  • Personal: “Run a 5K in under 30 minutes by June 30 to improve my fitness and endurance.”
  • Business: “Launch a new product line targeting millennials by Q3, supported by market research and a digital campaign.”

Why It Works:
A specific goal paints a vivid picture of success, making it easier to plan and execute the steps required.

2. Measurable
Adding metrics turns your goal into a trackable target. Without numbers, it’s hard to know if you’re making progress or need to adjust course.

Examples:

  • Personal: “Drink 64 ounces of water daily to stay hydrated.”
  • Business: “Increase quarterly sales revenue by 15% over last year.”

How to Track:
Use tools like spreadsheets, apps, or visual boards. For business goals, leverage analytics platforms to measure progress in real-time.

3. Achievable
While ambition is essential, goals should challenge you without being out of reach. Unrealistic targets can lead to frustration, while achievable ones build momentum.

Examples:

  • Personal: “Save $5,000 for a family vacation by setting aside $500 monthly and cutting unnecessary expenses.”
  • Business: “Secure three new clients within the next two months by attending networking events and following up with warm leads.”

Tips for Success:
Break larger goals into smaller, manageable milestones. Celebrate these wins to maintain motivation.

4. Relevant
Goals must align with your broader priorities. Why is this goal important, and how does it fit into the bigger picture?

Examples:

  • Personal: “Learn Spanish to communicate effectively during my upcoming trip to Mexico and enhance my global perspective.”
  • Business: “Implement a customer loyalty program to boost retention rates and align with our mission of prioritizing client relationships.”

Why This Matters:
Relevance ensures you’re investing your energy in areas that truly impact your personal growth or organizational success.

5. Time-Bound
Deadlines are crucial for maintaining focus and urgency. A goal without a timeline risks becoming a perpetual “someday” project.

Examples:

  • Personal: “Read 12 books this year by completing one each month.”
  • Business: “Redesign our website by December 15 to enhance user experience before the holiday shopping season.”

Pro Tip:
Create a timeline with checkpoints along the way. Regular reviews help you stay on track and make necessary adjustments.

Tips for Implementing SMART Goals
1. Write It Down
Studies show that writing down goals significantly increases the likelihood of achieving them. Create a dedicated space—be it a journal, whiteboard, or digital app—to document and revisit your goals regularly.
2. Create Accountability
Share your goals with someone you trust or work with an accountability partner. A business coach, for instance, can provide guidance, motivation, and the occasional nudge when progress stalls.
3. Celebrate Milestones
Every step forward is worth celebrating, no matter how small. Recognizing progress reinforces your commitment and keeps motivation high.
4. Be Adaptable
Life is unpredictable, and circumstances can change. Don’t hesitate to revisit and revise your goals to ensure they remain relevant and realistic.
